Retired Police Boss Vanishes Amid Targeted Crackdown Over SCNC Links

Fear and uncertainty grip the family of retired Police Commissioner Asobo Nyong Emmanuel after elements of the Cameroon military allegedly took him from his residence in Limbe during a late-night operation on Thursday, June 25, 2026. Relatives say they have received no official information about his whereabouts for days.

According to the family, the retired senior police officer was seized by heavily armed security officers wearing masks during a night raid on the family home. Since then, neither his relatives nor legal representatives have been informed of his place of detention, the reasons for his arrest, or his physical condition, raising fears of an enforced disappearance.

“Our father was taken away in the middle of the night, and since then we have received no information about where he is or whether he is even alive. We have searched everywhere we can think of, but nobody is willing to tell us anything,” explained Pa Asobo’s daughter, Asobo Cybel Wopon,

Family members say repeated attempts to obtain information from security authorities have yielded no results, leaving them uncertain whether the retired officer is alive or dead.

Sources close to the family allege that the disappearance is linked to Pa Asobo’s long-standing association with the Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC), a movement that advocates for the independence of the former British Southern Cameroons. Although the movement describes its campaign as peaceful, the government of Cameroon has for years regarded several of its activities as unlawful and has repeatedly arrested individuals suspected of involvement with the group.

“Our family is living in fear because we believe he is being punished for his political beliefs and because of the activities of my brother abroad. We are only asking that our father be produced before the law or released if he has committed no offence,” said Asobo Cybel Wopon.

Pa Asobo was among the pioneering members of the SCNC while serving in the police force and continued supporting the movement after his retirement. They believe security agencies recently uncovered details of his political involvement, placing him under renewed scrutiny.

Family members claim that investigators are attempting to establish a connection between Pa Asobo and his son, Ransom Tatuh Asobo, a former marine soldier who now lives in the United Kingdom and is an outspoken supporter of the SCNC.

Authorities say Ransom Tatuh has been coordinating and financing SCNC-related activities from abroad, using his father as a trusted intermediary to communicate with activists inside Cameroon. The allegations have not been independently verified, and no official charges have been publicly announced against either Pa Asobo or his son.

Relatives also allege that security forces have carried out several raids on Pa Asobo’s residence in recent months in search of documents, electronic devices and other materials they believe could support their investigations. During these operations, officers reportedly questioned neighbours and searched various parts of the property for evidence linking the family to SCNC activities.

The repeated security operations have left family members living in fear, with some reportedly abandoning their homes after believing they too had become targets of surveillance and possible arrest.

Human rights advocates have repeatedly expressed concern over allegations of arbitrary arrests, prolonged incommunicado detention and enforced disappearances in connection with the conflict in Cameroon. Rights organisations have called on authorities to ensure that all detainees are afforded due process, access to legal representation and communication with their families.

At the time of publication, Cameroon authorities had not publicly commented on the family’s allegations regarding Pa Asobo’s disappearance or the claims linking him to his son’s political activities.
