Here’s 28-year-old Regina Molombe, holding her four-year-old fitted to her bosom, while her two-year-old is tight to her back. The lady is only four days old in Buea, after spending more than two years in the forest of Ekona, due to the ongoing crisis plaguing the two English speaking regions of Cameroon.
“I was forced to the bush in 2018 after our house was razed and there were severe threats to our life,” she said.
While in the forest, Regina was allegedly raped several times leading her to pregnancy, hence, the birth of her second child.
“My daughter was only 2 years when was I forced into sex by some people who were in the bush with me. I got pregnant after they did it with me about four times. I wanted to terminate the pregnancy but I was advised to keep it for fear of my own life. I gave birth in the bush in 2019 and have since been taking care of my child, though the pains of the past still haunt me,” Regina expounded in tears.
Today, she’s among the 50 beneficiaries of some basic food supplies and other household consignments, donated by the United Pentecostal Church, Cameroon.
“We carried out a survey across Buea to identify some needy persons and the items they immediately needed. We came up with this number of persons who were identified as the most vulnerable among the needy and provided them with these food items and household materials. Our intention is that these items keep body and soul together, while we seek permanent solutions to the cause of their vulnerabilities,” Rev Samah Ndanghu, explained.
For persons like Regina who have undergone different forms of gender-based violence (GBV), the church intends to follow her up with some medical attention as well as some psychosocial support
to prevent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The situation of Regina is not uncommon in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon. Ever since the conflict broke out in 2017, many young girls and women have been subjected to all forms of GBV. According to the GBV advocacy group, LUKMEF Cameroon, at least 5 girls are subjected to physical and sexual torture on a daily basis in the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon. They are presently documenting the different forms of GBV practices taking place in the wake of the crisis.
